statement

"Now that 2020 comes right around the corner, what can you see and what can you experience. It will be a special day where everybody shares precise location data to be connected through communication technology at Zojoji Temple and its surrounding area, which is one of the most traditional and historic districts in Tokyo. Corresponding to the audience's movement, light and sound will synchronize. The audience will witness the futuristic scene of Tokyo." ―Rhizomatiks

overview

Rhizomatiks is pleased to announce that "Coded Field" will be held on November 16, 2019, as part of “Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL Special 13” organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture).
This is a public art program that takes place at Zojoji Temple and historical and traditional area in Tokyo, Shiba district, surrounding the temple.
Structural and geographical date of Zojoji Temple will be analyzed by using programming “Code” and is generated in virtual “Field” with this coded information embedded. That invisible information will be translated into light and sound and experienced in real space through balloon-shaped special devices developed independently by Rhizomatiks.
“Coded Fields” consists of a large scale experiential installation which many people can enjoy at the same time and dance performance by ELEVENPLAY, a dance company directed by MIKIKO.
In Tokyo where history and future, or tradition and innovation meet, the special art space will come into life for the night. Please come and enjoy futuristic Tokyo.

technology

The handheld device for the audience that Rhizomatiks has developed for this event adapted SPRESENSE™ by Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation as a mainboard.
The device equipped with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), LED and speakers will change its lights and sound patterns that the device emits according to the location data.
Since most of the pen lights used for concerts are usually controlled by group ID or seat numbers for lightning, they cannot be used for events where there are no fixed seats or the audience can wander around spontaneously. However, GNSS enables more flexible direction without restrictions on the audience location. With the improvement of positioning technologies, highly accurate position data used only indoors can be adapted to outdoor use, with which relationships between real space and virtual space move on to the next phase.
Baroon-shaped handheld devices give you visual illusions of lights floating around. Not only the lights but sound from the device also can be controlled by location or progression of live performance to make unprecedented soundscape by making sounds from speakers inherited inside those 1000 devices. Furthermore, we will introduce omni wheel robots(a cart robot that can move forward/backward and left/right) with lightning equipment for the first time as a fully autonomous driving device for live performance controlled with a positioning system using high-quality RTK-GPS*.
Please enjoy augmented and interrelating expression of lights, color, and sound in synch with cutting-edge lighting and sound system utilizing specifically this festival sights and surrounding area.

“RTK-GPS” is an abbreviation of “real-time kinematic GPS or Global positioning system”, highly accurate positioning system using position data from the base station.
